On the island of Newfoundland, good warm clothing has been an essential barrier to the harsh weather that Newfoundlanders experience. Warm woolen mittens are the workers best friend and the warmer the better. In the early days, many young maids learned to knit their own mittens at a very early age. They took the time and trouble to pattern their mittens with intricate designs. A mitten double knit with two colours is twice as warm as a mitten knit with a single colour. Try your hand at knitting a pair of Saltwater Mittens! Learn the techniques handed down for generations to create these beautiful, colourful mittens!
